We are coming up to the second leg of the quarter-finals, so let’s look at which teams will likely be advancing. The match ups are Juventus vs Barcelona, Leicester vs Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich, and Monaco vs Madrid. Just in case you don’t know, after the second leg, the team with the best record in their match ups will win. If still tied, it is based on goal difference. Now in the case that there is still nothing to separate them, then the team who scored the most goals as the away team advances. Finally, if it makes it this far, then they engage in a penalty shootout.
One of the two 2nd leg matches that are going to take place April 18, 2017 at 2:45 pm eastern time is Leicester vs Atletico Madrid. The home team for this game is Leicester. Their first match up, when Atletico Madrid was home, ended in a 1-0 Atletico win thanks to a goal off a penalty by player of the match, Antoine Griezmann, in the 28th minute. As Leicester scored no goals while the away team, if they win by 1 but allow Atletico at least 1 goal, then they are eliminated. A draw or lose would also eliminate Leicester. A 1-0 Leicester win would send the series into penalties. Atletico Madrid based on their players and previous play will likely win this series in my eyes, though it goes without saying that when you have teams of this caliber, any team can win.
The other match taking place on April 18, 2017 at 2:45 pm eastern time is Real Madrid vs FC Bayern. The home team for this game is Real Madrid. There first match up, when FC Bayern was home, ended in a 2-1 Real Madrid win after being down 1-0 thanks to two goals by player of the match Cristiano Ronaldo in the 47th and 77th minute. As Real Madrid scored two goals while away. If FC Bayern is to proceed to the semi-finals, they either need to win by at least two, or win with a score of at least 2. A 1-0 win for FC Bayern, draw, or loss would send Real Madrid through to the semi-finals. Now a 2-1 win for FC Bayern, and this series will go to penalties. This game is going to be a good one for sure, and if I had to choose one game to go to penalties, I’d pick this one.
One of the two 2nd leg matches that are going to take place April 19, 2017 at 2:45 pm eastern time is Monaco vs Borussia Dortmund. The home team for this game is Monaco. Their first match up, when Borussia Dortmund was home, ended in a 3-2 Monaco win thanks to the two goals by player of the match, Kylian Mbappe, in minutes 19 and 79, and the own goal by Sven Bender in the 35th minute. As Monaco scored 3 goals while away, if they lose by 1 but don’t allow Borussia Dortmund at least 3 goals, then they are going to proceed. The same would hold true if Monaco happens to win or draw. A Borussia Dortmund win by at least 2, or a 1 goal win where the side scores at least 4 goals, and they will move on. For there to be a penalty shootout to end this series Monaco must lose 3-2. If Monaco plays as good as they did first game they should be able to move on to the semi-finals, but Borussia Dortmund easily has the skill to take the 2nd match, and the series.
The other of the two 2nd leg matches that are going to take place April 19, 2017 at 2:45 pm eastern time is FC Barcelona vs Juventus. The home team for this game is FC Barcelona. There first match up, when Juventus was home, ended in a 3-0 Juventus win thanks to both the two goals by player of the match, Paulo Dybala, in minutes 7 and 22, and the goal by Giorgio Chiellini in the 55th minute. As FC Barcelona scored no goals while away, if they win by 3 goals but allow Juventus at least a goal, then they will be eliminated, as would happen if they win by less than 3, lose, or draw. A FC Barcelona win by at least 4 goals, and they will move on. For there to be a penalty shootout to end this series, FC Barcelona must win 3-0. FC Barcelona must pull off another huge series comeback to take this one. Their last 2 matches against Juventus ended 3-0 Juventus, and 4-0 Juventus respectively. Though, FC Barcelona has showed that they can make these comebacks, as they did in the round of 16, against PSG, where they went from a first leg 4-0 loss, to a second leg 6-1 win to edge out PSG, and win the series.
